Overexposed

Iratxe and Igor look at the challenges of female oppression. Visually inspired by the monochrome work of Birmingham artist Barbara Walker, Iratxe and Igor explored how women can feel overlooked and invisible.

“The starting point for the piece, entitled Overexposed, was Louise Palfreyman’s book “Once Upon a Time in Birmingham – Women Who Dared to Dream”. Through this book we got to know the Birmingham artist Barbara Walker.

‘In her paintings she bleaches out (overexposes) those in control (the ruling classes) portraying them instead in monochrome, whilst using colour to highlight and bring to life the underdog, thus reversing our perceptions based on history and experience.

“The central figure in Overexposed is seen being controlled by a range of faceless external forces, until finally she is released through rebirth, renewal and hope”.
